Research | General Overview

General interested in practical applications of Design as an integral part of performance, display & exhibition and in explaining otherwise complex and esoteric concepts. In particularly the way in which Design and new design technologies can be used to develop and expand narratives, which goes beyond aesthetic augmentation. Developing a specific focus upon the live ‘capture’ of events, and rendering these in real time. Additionally producing 2D works in which scale, time and perspective are examined and challenged.

My main research areas at present focus upon the following broad areas:
Experiential Design / Applied technology    |    Applied Motion Graphics   Interactive Design    |    Painting

Theoretically I am interested in the perception of what constitutes a ‘live’ event. On a cognitive level
this is undergoing great change; technology is shifting the balance between how we use long and short-term memory.

I am also interested in scale and format within design and art; the reduction of visuals onto screens of fixed dimensions increasingly forces design to work to a format. Whilst this has always been the case, and is not in itself a bad thing necessarily, I am interested in producing works in which scale, time and perspective are examined and challenged. This formed the basis of a project I exhibited at the Design Centre as part of Design Event north; the ‘Craft of Computational Design’ event in October 2013. This was based upon code-triggered multi-location time-lapse, which I developed into static and motion graphics, along with large-scale drawing. Taking this forward I will utilise projection mapping on static and moving surfaces. In 2014 I contributed to the BBC Big Draw, running a session in portraiture.
